FROM GROUND CULTURE. EDIBLE LANDSCAPERS.
What does a day in your work life look like?
''We start mornings with packing up the truck and trailer then head out to a different backyard each day to transform grass lawns into functional, food producing landscapes. This inclues building garden beds, planting fruit trees, sheet mulching over grass, and a lot of shovelling!! Oh, and there's usually some iced coffee + carrots somewhere in there too.''
What do you have to sacrifice to be good at what you do?
Owning nice/clean things! Being gardeners means our trucks are always dirty, our boots have holes, and our fingernails are never clean.
What scares you?
Perfection, sod, and tacky lawn ornaments. Horrifying!
What are the top five things that are always in your pockets?
Pruners, plant tags, hair elastic, cell phone (so many vegetable pictures), and rogue seeds!
What are you doing when you’re not working hard?
Enjoying the fruits of our labour! We love to cook, can, ferment, and fully experience the food that grows in the landscapes we tend to, and we love to share that bounty with friends.
Who’s a role model who helped you in your journey to where you are?
We've both worked on organic farms in different parts of the country and have learned so much from the folks on those farms. The sense of community along with the passion and expertise these people brought to their craft has inspired us to pursue running our dream business.
Do you have any special projects or cool things you want people to check out?
We launched a Garden Club in 2020 which is a fully immersive gardening course for anyone, anywhere, looking to grow their own food at home. www.groundculture.ca/gardenclub
